Rebibbia Festival 2024 Brings Street Art and Cinema to Rome Prison
The Rebibbia Festival 2024, now in its twentieth year, is transforming Rome's Rebibbia prison into a hub of culture and education. Organized by Fabio Cavalli (director of Teatro Libero di Rebibbia and co-director of Centro Studi Enrico Maria Salern with Laura Andreini) and Alessandro De Nino (art director of Rebibbia Digital Graffiti), the festival features theater, cinema, music, and art involving inmates and the public. This year's edition focuses on street art through Rebibbia Digital Graffiti, a mural project in the G8 courtyard led by De Nino's Visual Arts Laboratory. The mural, inspired by the concept of freedom, depicts fantastic animals undergoing metamorphosis toward liberation, using a fairy-tale style influenced by Lorenzo Mattotti with warm colors and exotic imagery reflecting the South American origins of many participants, who are mostly transgender. The project aims to bridge the digital divide by teaching digital art skills through hands-on learning. The festival continues October 23–25 with a cinema section in partnership with the Rome Film Festival, featuring the Manetti Bros presenting their film U.S. PALMESE.
