RebelArchitette Project Highlights Gender Pay Gap and Promotes Women in Architecture
The gender pay gap at Zaha Hadid Architects is 19.6%, with women earning less than men, attributed to a higher proportion of senior male staff who trained under Zaha Hadid. At Foster + Partners, the gap is 10.5%. The RebelArchitette project, led by Francesca Perani and a collective of 14 creatives under 35, aims to promote the title "Architetta" (supported by Accademia della Crusca), monitor female presence in juries and conferences, and support architecture students and graduates. They published a digital book "Architette = Women Architects / 1⁄2 Here We are!" featuring 183 women architects from the 1800s to today. The goal is 365 biographies, with the second part to be released at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. The project also seeks to reduce the gap between female architecture students and registered professionals, currently 67,000 women out of 155,000 architects in Italy.
