Rebecca Saunders and Ensemble Modern Win Biennale Musica 2024 Leoni
The 2024 Leoni award recipients have been revealed by the Biennale Musica. The Leone d'Oro alla Carriera (Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement) is awarded to British composer Rebecca Saunders, who resides in Berlin. Meanwhile, the Leone d'Argento (Silver Lion) is presented to the German group Ensemble Modern. The Biennale di Venezia's Board of Directors made the selections based on a proposal from Lucia Ronchetti, the Music sector director, in conjunction with the 68th International Festival of Contemporary Music, themed Absolute Music, scheduled for September 26 to October 10, 2024. Award ceremonies will take place on September 27 and 29 at Ca' Giustinian, where Ensemble Modern will debut two significant works by Saunders: Wound on September 26 and Skull on September 28.
