Rebecca Moccia's Instagram Performance for International Women's Day

On March 8, 2020, Italian artist Rebecca Moccia (born 1992 in Naples) will present a site-specific performance titled "Sharing Loosing" on the Instagram account of Mazzoleni gallery in Turin, in celebration of International Women's Day. The performance is the first in a series of social media art events called #socialeyes, initiated by the gallery to offer its digital spaces to artists. Mazzoleni, established in Turin in 1986 and with a London branch since 2014, aims to allow audiences to experience new artistic experiments online via their devices. The performance invites tagged users to share an image of the piece within a Story. Moccia previously collaborated with the gallery on "Windows," a concept show visible from the gallery's window at Via Cernaia 1, Turin, where her installation "Rest Your Eyes" was featured during Artissima in November 2019, curated by Gaspare Luigi Marcone. The new performance reflects on the digital image, specifically the JPEG file, which loses pixel data when copied and shared, analogous to how memories fade and news distorts through viral sharing. Elena Fortunati, project collaborator, explains that this process allows for new interpretations but also risks altering the original truth. The performance responds to the current crisis in the cultural sector due to COVID-19, which has led to restricted access to museums and institutions, prompting creative uses of technology.
