Rebecca Allen's Bush Soul 3 at Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The 'Worldbuilding. Gaming and Art in the Digital Age' exhibition has launched at the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and will be on display for 18 months. This showcase includes over 30 artists from around the globe, featuring trailblazers such as JODI, Peggy Ahwesh, Cory Arcangel, and Sturtevant, as well as emerging and traditional artists like Ed Atkins. A highlight of the exhibition is Rebecca Allen's interactive piece 'Bush Soul 3' (1999). Born in Michigan in 1953, Allen is a pioneer in digital art and the founding chair of UCLA's Department of Design and Media Arts, focusing on human movement simulation and AI. The development of 'Bush Soul 3' spanned three years, utilizing the software 'Emergence' to simulate artificial life, following her work in 3D video games during the 1990s.
