Réalités (hommage à Courbet) at Passerelle, Brest

The exhibition 'Réalités (hommage à Courbet)', previously shown in Montbéliard, was reconfigured and expanded at Centre d'art Passerelle in Brest, a former ripening warehouse. Curated by Philippe Cyroulnik, it avoids typical collective show pitfalls through subtle dialogues among strong works. Twelve artists explore generalized urbanization's impact on individuals: Valérie Jouve, Andrea Keen, Jean Rault, and Jean-Louis Schoellkopf (photos); Michèle Waquant (videos); Philippe Cognée, Benyounes Semtati, and Djamel Tatah (paintings). Their works depict lost connections—entangled roads, frozen faces, stigmatized bodies—reflecting planned densification and mass housing. Images maintain enigmatic frontality and opacity, resisting narrative. The homage to Courbet extends beyond Bernard Borgeaud's eponymous black-and-white photos of a lamppost and trash can as 'real allegories' of modern urbanity. History surfaces through crises and catastrophes, with images aiming to gather viewers. Works include Maurice Muller's pathetic monuments, Jean Rault's mute soldiers, Robin Collyer's cynical 'Songs for Manuel', and Jean-Luc Moulène's 'Objets de grève' testifying to collective struggles. The exhibition is accompanied by a substantial catalog and a conference program on urban issues, resonant in Brest as a reconstructed city.
