Realismo Magico exhibition at Mart Rovereto explores 1920s figurative painting

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Mart in Rovereto presents 'Realismo Magico,' curated by Gabriella Belli and Valerio Terraroli, opening for the museum's 15th anniversary. Featuring over seventy works from public and private collections, the exhibition traces the development of Magic Realism, a term coined by Franz Roh in 1925 and adapted by critic Massimo Bontempelli in 1929. The show highlights artists such as Antonio Donghi, Ubaldo Oppi, Felice Casorati, and Cagnaccio di San Pietro, alongside lesser-known figures like Edita Broglio and Gregorio Sciltian. It also includes works by Carlo Carrà and Giorgio de Chirico, illustrating the shift from metaphysical painting to a classicist yet enigmatic style. The exhibition will travel to the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and the Folkwang Museum in Essen in 2018, reflecting growing international interest in 1920s Italian painting.
