Re Rebaudengo Serpentine Grants: Anglo-Italian Prize for Under-24 Artists
The Serpentine Gallery and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo have launched the first edition of the Re Rebaudengo Serpentine Grants, a prize for emerging artists born after 1989. Applications were submitted via the Discrit 89plus platform on DIS Magazine between July and August 2013. A dual jury system was used: an International Jury and a Popular Jury. The International Jury included Francesco Bonami, Lauren Boyle, Simon Castets, Solomon Chase, Kevin McGarry, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Julia Peyton-Jones, Eugenio Re Rebaudengo, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, and Jochen Volz. The Popular Jury consisted of online voters. On October 16, 2013, the winners were announced at the Serpentine Gallery. Riccardo Paratore (Italian/German, b. 1990) won the International Jury prize with his work "Belonging." The Popular Jury winners were Niko Karamyan (USA, b. 1992) and Tierney Finster (USA, b. 1991), known as Niko the Ikon and Tierney Finster (formed 2004), with their work "Can We Talk," the first video of a trilogy. Each winner receives €15,000 to produce their works, which will be exhibited at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo during Artissima (November 8-10, 2013). Special mentions went to Haroon Gunn-Salie (South Africa, b. 1989), Jasper Spicero (USA, b. 1990), and Amalia Ulman (Argentina, b. 1989).
