Re-Re: A Playful Take on Cinema Clichés at Espace Paul Ricard

exhibition · 2026-04-23

At Espace Paul Ricard in Paris, from March 3 to 24, 2006, curator Jean-Marc Chapoulie organized the group exhibition "Re-Re," which humorously recycles cinematic tropes into sculptural and video works. François Nouguies fetishizes film equipment with sculptural reproductions of dolly tracks, cameras, and clapperboards. Julien Prévieux bombards a James Bond film with sparks and flames. Chapoulie himself presents the Lumière brothers' "Sortie d'usine" in its original, altered historical versions, and a contemporary 3D transcription. Martin Le Chevalier offers an interactive video on Oblomov's laziness. Stéphane Bérard places viewers on a couch facing a playlist of pop songs stripped of lyrics and remixed into suspenseful thriller atmospheres. Kolkoz addresses stardom by having actors after the César ceremony produce serial copies of sketches of Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan, like a game of telephone. Marie-Laure Cazin creates a trick film from still photographs, using software to generate intermediate images and create mysterious movements. Alain Della Negra and Kaori Kinoshita document players of the video game The Sims, exploring the blur between real and virtual life in hilarious narratives. The exhibition responds to 1990s works that seriously transposed cinema into plastic arts, instead adopting a farcical mode.
