Re:Humanism IV Edition Explores AI and Time Perception in Rome
The fourth edition of Re:Humanism, a biennial prize turned cultural platform, opened at Fondazione Pastificio Cerere in Rome. Curated by Daniela Cotimbo, the exhibition revolves around the concept of "Timeline Shift," inviting artists to critically examine how artificial intelligence influences temporal perception and perpetuates stereotypes. From over 500 proposals received in two months, 11 works were selected, predominantly video installations and interactive multimedia pieces. The first prize was awarded to Lo-Def Film Factory (Francois Knoetze and Amy Louise Wilson) for "Concept Drift," an immersive environment blending video games, visual archives, and postcolonial narratives. Second prize went to Isabel Merchante for "One Day I Saw the Sunset Ten Thousand Times," a poetic reflection on the mechanization of perception. Third prize was given to Minne Atairu for "Da Braidr," a conceptual startup using AI to support Black women's economic autonomy. Other featured artists include Federica Di Pietrantonio, Amanda E. Metzger, IOCOSE, Esther Hunziker, and Kian Peng Ong. The basement space Molino hosts works by Adam Cole, Gregor Petrikovič, and Daniel Shanken. Additionally, Franz Rosati won the APA Prize for "DATALAKE:CONTINGENCY," a video displayed across the city. The exhibition challenges dominant AI models, proposing ethical, sustainable, and inclusive alternatives.
