Re-Emerging Venezia: Immersive Photo Show Recalls Lockdown in Venice

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A multidisciplinary project called Re-Emerging, created by three artists and two scientists with support from CORILA (Consortium for Coordination of Research on the Venetian Lagoon System), explores connections between pandemic isolation and nature's response to reduced human pressure. The immersive photography exhibition Re-Emerging Venezia runs from March 1 to 15, 2024, at Procuratie Vecchie in Venice. It features works by photographers Gaby Wagner, Sophie Fauchier, and Val Masferrer-Oliveira, organized around three emotional states: 'We Were Like This,' 'We Felt Like This,' and 'We Dreamed Like This.' The exhibition includes an interactive photo map and a sound carpet reproducing lockdown noises. Wagner's photographs capture Venetian palaces and Gothic architecture reflected in canals; Fauchier's show a deserted Venice; Masferrer-Oliveira's blend reality with dreams, evoking a submerged Venice reminiscent of Atlantis. The project also aims to build a collective memory archive by collecting digital images of exteriors taken during lockdown from the Venetian community, geolocated on an interactive map. Materials will be preserved by CORILA, systematized with Ca' Foscari University, and freely accessible online. The archive will be available via a virtual exhibition on the Re-Emerging website until March 2025, when testimony collection ends.
