RCR Arquitectes Wins 2017 Pritzker Architecture Prize

award · 2026-05-05

The 2017 Pritzker Architecture Prize has been awarded to Rafael Aranda (1961), Carme Pigem (1962), and Ramon Vilalta (1960), the three Spanish architects behind RCR Arquitectes. Founded in 1988 in Girona, the studio is recognized for its "conscious and reflective approach" and deep connection to site. The trio resisted metropolitan allure, staying rooted in their hometown. They graduated from the Escola Tecnica Superior d'Arquitectura del Vallès in 1987. Notable projects include the Barberí Laboratory (a converted early 1900s foundry serving as their studio) and the Bell-Lloc Winery with an underground promenade. Previous honors include the 2015 Médaille d'Or de l'Académie d'Architecture Française, 2012 RIBA International Fellowship, and 2010 AIA Honorary Fellowship. The award ceremony will take place on May 20 at the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace, in Tokyo. Carme Pigem expressed joy and responsibility at the recognition of three professionals working closely together. The Pritzker Prize, established in 1979 by the Pritzker family and administered by the Hyatt Foundation, awards a bronze medal and $100,000. The 2017 jury included architects Benedetta Tagliabue and Richard Rogers. Recent laureates include Alejandro Aravena (2016), Frei Paul Otto (2015), Shigeru Ban (2014), and Toyo Ito (2013).
