RCR Arquitectes to Design Unicaja Foundation's New Málaga Headquarters

The Unicaja Foundation has commissioned RCR Arquitectes to design its new headquarters in Málaga's Plaza de la Merced, following city council approval of the plot. The site, adjacent to the Alcazaba and Roman Theatre, requires a design sensitive to its historic surroundings. The project will preserve and display archaeological remains discovered after demolishing former cinemas. The building will host exhibitions, concerts, conferences, educational programs, and social projects, aiming to become a civic hub. The 75-year municipal concession covers 1,298.70 m² with a maximum buildable area of 6,340 m²; the foundation will pay an annual canon of €411,083.58. RCR Arquitectes, Pritzker Prize winners in 2017, are known for their expressive use of materials like corten steel, natural stone, exposed concrete, and glass. Notable works include the Soulages Museum in Rodez, Les Cols restaurant, and Tossols-Basil Athletics Stadium. The project addresses a long-standing urban void in Málaga's historic center.
