Raymond Hains Retrospective at Centre Pompidou Explores Language and Coincidence
The Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris hosted the first retrospective of French artist Raymond Hains from June 27 to September 3, 2001. The exhibition, titled after the artist's wordplay, featured a blue palisade inspired by bank video surveillance systems, echoing his earlier Palissade du chantier Beaubourg (1976). Hains, known for his fascination with puns and linguistic coincidences, presented works including Monochrome dans le métro (1983), a blue poster above Paris metro seats, and abstract films Pénélope (1950-54) and Études aux allures (1960). The show also included Mackintoshages, oversized matches from Iris Clert, and wordplay pieces like L'Art à Vinci and L'Âne vêtu de la peau de lion (1967). Two posters from the series La France déchirée, addressing the Algerian War (OAS, fusillez les plastiqueurs and Alleg, Alger, 1958-61), were displayed without explanation, leaving their impact ambiguous. The exhibition's centerpiece was an internet terminal housed inside a Breton wardrobe, reflecting Hains's blend of classification and disruption. Curated by Carole Boulbès, the retrospective highlighted Hains's role as a 'dialectician of truisms.'
