Ray Smith's 'Before the Fall' at San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum
Ray Smith's exhibition 'Before the Fall: The Architecture of Vulnerability' at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum in Texas brings together two bodies of work from the 2000s and 2010s. Smith, born in Brownsville, Texas and raised in Central Mexico, draws from Pablo Picasso, Mexican muralism, and surrealism. The earlier works (2000-2001) are large-scale dreamlike oil paintings, while the later works (2018) use mixed media on discarded plexiglass mirrors assembled into wall partitions. A key piece, 'Pyroclastic Flows (Diptych)' (2001), created with Rafael Vargas Suarez, depicts volcanic ash and was withheld from exhibition after 9/11. 'Carta' (2001) shows two dogs in a bedroom with brick-like bedding, referencing surrealism and Frida Kahlo. 'Border Partitions' (2018) features enamel spray paint and ink marker on mirrored plexiglass, forming folding screens that reflect viewers and project a shadow resembling Our Lady of Guadalupe. The exhibition explores themes of vulnerability, power, and border identity, informed by Gloria Anzaldúa's concept of Nepantla. The museum is located near the U.S.–Mexico border, adding layers of meaning. The show runs through May 23, 2026.
