Ray Caesar's Digital Surrealism Comes to Rome's Dorothy Circus Gallery

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Ray Caesar (London, 1958), a digital surrealist who uses the 3D modeling software Maya, will present a new series of works at Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome starting October 20. The exhibition is titled Lost in a Fragile Myth. Caesar worked for seventeen years in the photography and art department of a Toronto pediatric hospital, an experience that deeply influences his art, which blends dreams, memories, art history, and ambiguous figures. The gallery also has a location in London's Notting Hill, and on November 22 it will move to Marble Arch in Connaught Village. Caesar describes his work as based on emotional memory of his past, which becomes more distant with age, evolving into a personal mythology. He believes myth defines individuals and society, and that entertainment media are modern retellings of ancient stories. He sees his childhood horrors with nostalgia now, and considers angels real, having witnessed compassion and fierce will in hospital staff. He draws inspiration from all art, past and present, and collects textures that hold personal meaning, often painting from memory.
