exhibition · 2026-05-05

Robert Rauschenberg's 'The 1/4 Mile or 2 Furlong Piece' is on view at the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing until August 21, 2016. The exhibition marks the artist's return to China over thirty years after his landmark ROCI China show in 1985. The 190-piece work, created between 1981 and 1998, spans a quarter mile and incorporates materials from his travels. Curated by Susan Davidson of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and David White of the Rauschenberg Foundation, the show also includes photographs from his 1982 trip to China, where he collaborated with a papermaker in Jingxiang, Anhui province, creating '7 Characters.' His ROCI (Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange) project traveled to over ten countries from 1984 to 1991. The 1985 ROCI China exhibition attracted over 300,000 visitors in three weeks, influencing the '85 New Wave generation of Chinese artists.
