Raumdrei Architekten Revives 16th-Century Alpine Farmstead in Laion
Raumdrei Architekten has completed the adaptive reuse of Oberbuchfelder, a protected 16th-century alpine Paarhof in Laion, Italy, transforming it into high-end holiday apartments. The project emphasizes rural minimalism, preserving the raw, textured legacy of the original structure. The architects stabilized and exposed historic masonry, introduced warm larch wood and minimalist steel details, and inserted modern amenities as discrete "boxes within a box" to maintain architectural integrity. The barn was converted into a light-filled retreat by working within the original timber framework. The project serves as a manifesto for conscious building, demonstrating how heritage conservation can contribute to modern identity in South Tyrol. Similar adaptive reuse projects include Strazne Cottage by Mimosa Architects in the Czech Republic, Pyrenees Workshop Renovation by Mesnil Architectures, Red House by Aleksandra Hyz in Poland, Winemaker House by Atelier FCA in Burgundy, and Borova Lada Cottage by Studio Plys.
