Raúl Sánchez Architects updates 19th-century sailor's home in Mataró
Raúl Sánchez Architects renovated a 19th-century home in Mataró, Spain, originally owned by sailor Antoni Cuyas. The house, now occupied by his great-great-grandson Manuel Cuyas and his wife Nuria, was updated to suit modern living and remote work. The practice focused on three spaces: the entrance hall, dining room, and living area. In the living room, a stainless steel platform with built-in desks and a sofa was added, while original ceiling, wallpaper, and terracotta tiles were preserved. The dining room received dark oak flooring and stainless steel shelves, plus a red Carlo Scarpa Orseolo table. The entrance hall was painted vermillion red, and one of Antoni Cuyas' swords is displayed in a glass case. A discrete climate control system was also installed.
