Rare Vintage Ice Lolly Wrappers Memorialized in 96-Page Book
A new 96-page book, compiled by pop culture collector Jonny Trunk, memorializes incredibly rare vintage ice lolly wrappers, featuring designs from Fonzie, Elvis, the Daleks, Mini Milk, Seaside Saucy, and Freak Out. The project originated seven years ago when Trunk visited the Stockport home of the late John Townsend, a hoarder who had amassed a vast collection of British ephemera. Townsend, who grew up in an orphanage in Surrey, began collecting milk bottle tops in the 1950s and never stopped, filling his five-bedroom house with printed paper items until his death in 2016. Trunk, who is also a writer, DJ, broadcaster, and record-label owner, describes the house as impossible to enter due to the sheer volume of collected items. The book serves as a nostalgia-inducing tribute to British pop culture and the artistry of ice lolly packaging.
