Rare Mickey Mouse Charlie Hebdo tribute cover goes to auction in Turin
A rare Mickey Mouse comic book cover dedicated to Charlie Hebdo, never officially published, will be auctioned by Little Nemo Art Gallery in Turin on April 30, 2022. The cover, drawn by Stefano Turconi for issue 3089 of Topolino, was deemed inappropriate by Disney and replaced before release. It shows Mickey and Donald raising pencils in solidarity with the satirical newspaper after the January 7, 2015 terrorist attack that killed 12 people, including editor Stéphane Charbonnier and cartoonists Cabu, Tignous, Philippe Honoré, and Georges Wolinski. Only one physical copy is known to exist, saved from destruction. The starting price is €2,300, expected to set a record for Disney collectibles in Italy. Sergio Pignatone, owner of the auction house, called it a historical document reflecting Topolino's role as a mirror of contemporary reality.
