Rare Maria Martins sculpture heads to auction at Rago/Wright
A rare version of Maria Martins' 'Impossible' (1946), a key Surrealist sculpture, will be offered at Rago/Wright's May 14th Post War & Contemporary Art auction. One of only three known examples, it is the only version in private hands. The other two are held in museum collections. Estimated at $150,000–200,000, the work exemplifies Martins' biomorphic forms and mythological themes. Created during her New York period, its appearance marks a significant market moment. Lauren Bradley, Director of Fine Art at Rago/Wright, noted that major works by Martins almost never come to market.
