Rare Keith Haring Self-Portrait and Intimate Works from Kermit Oswald Collection Go on View at Sotheby's
A rare tri-color self-portrait by Keith Haring, one of only six known to exist, is among 41 works from the collection of his childhood friend Kermit Oswald now on view at Sotheby's Breuer building in Manhattan. The free public exhibition, which opened May 2, includes paintings, sculptures, letters, and photographs spanning 1977 to 1989. Highlights include a yellow crib and dresser set Haring painted for Oswald's son, estimated at $250,000–350,000, and the 1985 self-portrait expected to fetch $3–5 million. The collection, described by curator Jeffrey Deitch as one of the most significant of Haring's works, will be sold in three auctions starting May 14 through October. Oswald and Haring met in Sunday school in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and remained close friends, with Haring visiting Oswald's woodworking studio and creating works inspired by the medium. The auction also includes letters discussing art and technology, offering insight into Haring's early visual vocabulary.
