Rare Che Guevara photo of Hiroshima shown in Tokyo exhibition

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A rare photograph of Che Guevara taken in Hiroshima is the centerpiece of an exhibition in Tokyo marking the 50th anniversary of his death. The show, at Ebisu Garden Place in Meguro district until August 27, 2017, features 240 photographs from the Centro de Estudios Che Guevara in Havana. Curated by Camilo Guevara, the revolutionary's son, the exhibition covers Guevara's public and private life, including his motorcycle journey across Latin America and visits to India and Africa. The Hiroshima photo, taken during Guevara's 1959 Asian tour six months after Castro's victory, shows a devastated landscape with a memorial for atomic bomb victims. Guevara wrote on a postcard to Cuba: 'To fight better for peace, one must look at Hiroshima.' The exhibition opens as Japan commemorates the 72nd anniversary of the bombing.
