Raqs Media Collective to Lead Yokohama Triennale 2020 as Artistic Directors

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Raqs Media Collective has been selected as artistic directors for the Yokohama Triennale 2020. The New Delhi-based group, comprising Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta, was appointed by the event's organizing committee. Their curatorial approach, described as highly intellectual and polemical, influenced the decision. Recent projects include directing the 2016 Shanghai Biennale and this year's exhibition 'In the Open or in Stealth' at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona. The collective aims to establish polyglot anchors that translate and poetically amplify the triennale's themes. Yokohama's historical significance as one of Japan's first international trade ports in the 19th century, following nearly 200 years of isolation, informs its culture of openness to untested ideas and unfamiliar knowledge. The city continues to engage with current geopolitical issues. An interview with Raqs Media Collective appears in the Winter 2018 issue of ArtReview Asia. The announcement was made on 29 November 2018.
