cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The fresco titled 'Triumph of Galatea', created by Raphael (1483–1520) in 1512 at the Villa Farnesina in Rome, is set to be restored. This villa, designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi for banker Agostino Chigi, also contains two additional frescoes that will be restored: 'Polyphemus' by Sebastiano del Piombo and 'The Wedding of Alexander and Roxane' by Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (Il Sodoma). Virginia Lapenta will oversee the restoration, which is funded by IGT and carried out by Antonio Forcellino, who previously worked on Raphael's 'Sibyls' (1514). The last restoration of 'Triumph of Galatea' occurred in the 1970s. Investigations will follow Professor Antonio Sgamellotti's finding of 'Egyptian blue'. IGT's CEO Fabio Cairoli expressed support for the restoration and guided tours available until January 2023.
