Raphael Fonseca to curate 14th Mercosur Biennial with youngest team ever

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Raphael Fonseca, who has served as a curator at the Denver Art Museum since 2021, has been named chief curator for the fourteenth Mercosur Biennial, set to launch in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in September 2024. He will collaborate with Tiago Sant’Ana and Yina Jiménez Suriel, both in their twenties, marking the youngest curatorial team in the event's history. Although the theme remains undisclosed, Fonseca highlighted the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency, emphasizing that large biennials mirror their contemporary context. Additionally, he is co-curating the 22nd Contemporary Art Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil in São Paulo, which opens in October 2024. Anna Mattos and Marina Feldens will oversee the public programme in Porto Alegre, while education projects will be managed by artist Andréa Hygino and educator Michele Ziegt.
