Raphael Fonseca appointed visual arts programmer at Lisbon's Culturgest foundation
Raphael Fonseca has been appointed as the new visual arts programmer at Culturgest, which is connected to the state-owned bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos in Portugal. He will also keep his position at the Denver Art Museum, but will transition to a curator-at-large role, planning to move to Lisbon by June. Currently, he leads the Department of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art at the Denver Art Museum. Fonseca is set to curate the Taiwan Pavilion for the 2026 Venice Biennale and co-curate the 3rd Counterpublic Triennial in St. Louis this year. He will co-direct the Sequences festival in Reykjavik in 2027 alongside Yina Jiménez Suriel. He replaces Bruno Marchand, who took a new role at MAAT in Porto in March. Culturgest, established in 1993, has two exhibition spaces in Lisbon and supports various arts, including theater and music.
