Rania Matar's 'Oceans at My Door' Opens at Fitchburg Art Museum

exhibition · 2026-04-22

On March 11, the Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) will unveil 'Rania Matar: Oceans at My Door', an exhibition that highlights the museum's recent acquisition of Matar's collection 'SHE', which features 13 photographs. The Lebanese-American photographer, who divides her time between the US and the Middle East, captures the experiences of girls and women, exploring themes of personal identity across cultures. 'SHE' centers on young women in their twenties, depicted within their broader surroundings after leaving home. Additionally, the exhibition showcases later pieces from 'Where Do I Go?', a series that reflects on Lebanese women following national crises, including the 2019 uprising, the pandemic, and the 2020 Port of Beirut explosions. Curator Lauren Szumita describes the works as a universal commentary on femininity, resilience, and womanhood.
