Random International's 'Life in a Different Resolution' at Nxt Museum, Amsterdam

The Nxt Museum in Amsterdam, founded in 2020 to explore new media, presents its third exhibition: a retrospective of Random International, the collective founded by Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass in 2005. Titled 'Life in a Different Resolution' and curated by Bogomir Doringer, the show gathers key works from the duo's twenty-year career, including the European premiere of the immersive room 'Living Room'. The exhibition explores themes of machine vision, artificial intelligence, privacy, and technology's impact on humanity. Central to the show is 'Presence and Erasure', which examines visibility and invisibility, privacy, facial recognition, and the desire for prominence. Featuring a soundscape by Japanese composer Mamiko Motto, the installation scans visitors' faces and projects them onto a monumental photochromatic canvas, where they dissolve over time. 'Our Future Selves' activates through visitor movement, projecting a low-resolution image of the body on a three-dimensional grid, but as a mirror image that transcends time and space. 'Fifteen Points' reduces the human figure to fifteen points of light that mimic body movements, set to music by Chihei Hatakeyama. The iconic 'Living Room', with a soundscape by Signe Lykke, envelops viewers in a grid of light that feels both ethereal and solid, prompting a co-creative dance between human and machine.
