Random International and Studio Wayne McGregor premiere AI-human exploration 'No One is an Island'
Random International and Studio Wayne McGregor have launched 'No One is an Island,' a digital artwork premiering in three chapters online until January 2021. The work examines the intersection of humanity and artificial intelligence, exploring how automation affects our need for connection. A sculpture at its core tests what minimal information makes an animated body appear human, transitioning from robotic to living form. Dancers from Studio Wayne McGregor perform movements inspired by Picasso's light drawings, creating electric light lines. Chitei Hatakeyama composed a special score for the piece. BMW i and Superblue partnered on the project, with BMW's Head of Brand Cooperations Hedwig Solis Weinstein noting that cross-disciplinary collaboration pushes boundaries. Random International cofounder Hannes Koch questions whether engaging with unknown systems increases vulnerability. Wayne McGregor emphasizes generating empathetic connections between people through technology. A live performance is scheduled for next year.
