Ramon Moro's Calima: Black Metal Meets Canary Islands

Ramon Moro released his album 'Calima' on January 6, 2023, via the Florentine label Dio Drone. The album blends black metal vocals with trumpet and flugelhorn, inspired by the Calima weather phenomenon—a rare Saharan dust haze—experienced on Lanzarote. Moro studied extreme vocal techniques for two years with Mattia Casabona. The album cover, a photo by his partner, depicts him in a rocky landscape reminiscent of the demon Pazuzu from 'The Exorcist'. Moro presented the album on January 10, 2023, at the Galoppatoio of Cavallerizza Reale in Turin, featuring a performance by dancer Angela Babuin. He has performed in locations such as a 1940s air-raid shelter, a hydroelectric plant, deconsecrated churches, and the Fontanelle Cemetery in Naples. Moro cites classical composers Mahler, Shostakovich, Wagner, and Ligeti as influences, alongside black metal bands Burzum, Mayhem, and Satyricon. He previously collaborated with artists Botto e Bruno, Alessandro Sciaraffa, and Paolo Spaccamonti. Moro will pause performances until late June 2023 for another musical project.
