Rambo Salinas' 'Turnt Buckle' Collages at The Gallery at MBS

San Antonio artist Rambo Salinas presents his first solo exhibition, 'Turnt Buckle,' at The Gallery at MBS, curated by local artist Jorge Villarreal. The show features twenty-two mostly untitled black-and-white collages that celebrate the underground cultures of Salinas's youth, particularly wrestling and Chicané music. Salinas, a self-described Tejano artist, grew up in Alice, Texas, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, where he was influenced by wrestlers and luchadores on public access TV and VHS films. His collages draw from vintage wrestling magazines he collected, including a massive collection from 1960 to 1987, and from flea markets like Mexico City's La Lagunilla. In 2013, he released two issues of a zine titled 'Tacón' based on these images. The works feature wrestlers like Sweet Georgia Brown, the Sheik, and Abdullah the Butcher, alongside musical icons such as La Tigresa, Las Hermanas Huertas, Pedro Yerana, Perez Prado, Betty Davis, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, and DJ Charlie Chase. Salinas also includes San Antonio legends like Flaco Jiménez, Nick Villarreal, Joe Anthony, and Adán Hernandez. The collages embody what Svetlana Boym calls 'reflective nostalgia,' reimagining marginalized performers and subcultures. Salinas's process involves photocopying images, cutting them with an X-Acto knife, and arranging them deliberately. The exhibition is on view by appointment through September 5, 2026, at 1115 South Alamo Street, San Antonio.
