Rambla Papireto: Urban Regeneration in Palermo's Danisinni District

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

The Rambla Papireto project in Palermo's Danisinni district concluded its first phase on July 2, 2017, with a festival attended by Mayor Leoluca Orlando. Danisinni, a depressed area historically linked to the Papireto River (filled in due to pollution), has been neglected despite nearby landmarks like the Cathedral, Royal Palace, and Palazzo della Zisa. Since 2013, associations like ASTES and pro-Danissini have pushed for revitalization. In 2015, Accademia di Belle Arti professor Valentina Console and colleague Angela La Ciura started a social farm on donated land. In 2017, Console and artist Enzo Patti launched Rambla Papireto, a workshop involving street art (CaravanSerai), circus (Circ'all), and communication (NEU agency). The project aims to transform the neighborhood into an open-air gallery, artist residencies, and a tourist route connecting the Royal Palace to the Zisa. Mayor Orlando stated the initiative has awakened residents' civic consciousness. The next phase calls for reopening pedestrian paths and abandoned municipal spaces.
