Ramak Fazel's Milan Unit 1994-2009 Archive Acquired by MAXXI
The MAXXI museum in Rome presents "Ramak Fazel's Milan Unit 1994-2009," the first archive-work acquired by the institution, curated by Simona Antonacci. The archive encompasses the Iranian photographer's entire photographic output from his years in Milan (1994-2009), including negatives, slides, contact sheets, and prints, along with newspaper clippings, magazine covers, invoices, and functional cameras. Fazel's studio was located on Alzaia del Naviglio Grande 42. The archive also contains personal objects like dried roses. Fazel, born in Abadan in 1965, moved to Milan in 1994 after earning a mechanical engineering degree and working as an assistant in New York. He initially arrived with a Rolleiflex camera and a portfolio of American portraits. In Milan, he photographed design and architecture for magazines such as Domus, Abitare, and Casa Brutus. His first commission for Abitare was photographing a chair, which he treated as a portrait. The archive references figures like Enzo Mari and Lea Vergine, with whom Fazel collaborated. Fazel's travels include Tokyo, Bombay, the United States, Yemen, and Iran. The exhibition runs until September 27, 2026, at MAXXI, Via Guido Reni, 4/A.
