Ralph Rugoff Announces 'May You Live in Interesting Times' as 2019 Venice Biennale Theme
Ralph Rugoff, curator of the 2019 Venice Biennale, has revealed the exhibition's title and conceptual direction. Titled 'May You Live in Interesting Times,' the biennial will examine art's capacity to respond to contemporary political conditions, particularly the proliferation of fake news and alternative facts. Rugoff explained that the digital spread of misinformation is eroding political discourse and public trust, making it essential to reassess fundamental reference points. The title originates from a 1936 speech by British MP Austen Chamberlain, who mistakenly attributed the phrase to a Chinese curse. Although no such curse exists, the expression has been repeatedly invoked by Western politicians over the past century, becoming what Rugoff describes as an 'ersatz cultural relic' and an example of Occidental 'Orientalism.' Despite its fictional origins, the phrase has exerted real rhetorical influence in significant public debates. The biennial aims to emphasize how art and artists can broaden audience perspectives and challenge entrenched thinking habits. Rugoff stressed that the exhibition's primary value lies not in the objects displayed but in how visitors might later apply their experience to confront everyday realities with expanded viewpoints and renewed energy. The event is scheduled to run from May 11 to November 24, 2019. Paolo Baratta, director of the Venice Biennale, joined Rugoff in announcing the theme.
