RAID Corleone: Artists Occupy Mafia-Confiscated Building for Manifesta 12

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

On June 17, 2018, the art collective FatStudio launched its RAID initiative in Corleone, Sicily, taking over a structure previously owned by the mafia-linked Lo Bue family. This six-hour event coincided with the opening of Manifesta 12 in Palermo, featuring 17 artists such as Alessandro Brighetti, Giulio Cassanelli, and Alfredo Jaar, among others. They will create site-specific works that aim to transform the building's story, emphasizing themes of redemption over mafia connections. The three-story palazzina, split into two mirrored sections by a wall, represents the clash between legality and crime. Supported by the Comune di Corleone, Libera, CIDMA, and White Box NY, the project will also be livestreamed. RAID has previously occurred in Milan, Turin, and Bologna.
