Rai sells iconic Teatro delle Vittorie and other prime real estate, including works by Gio Ponti and Italo Gamberini
Italy's public broadcaster Rai is proceeding with a historic real estate plan approved in 2022, selling 15 assets across Rome, Milan, Florence, Turin, Genoa, Cagliari, and Venice, totaling over 150,000 square meters. The most high-profile property is the Teatro delle Vittorie in Rome, a legendary TV studio that hosted shows like Canzonissima, Studio Uno, Rischiatutto, and Affari tuoi. Built in 1950 and renovated in the 1980s, the 5,500 sqm theater is located near Prati and the Vatican. Rai cites excessive maintenance costs and structural obsolescence as reasons for the sale. Expressions of interest are due by May 22, 2026. The sale has sparked a social media campaign led by Fiorello. Other notable properties include the 54,000 sqm Rai production center in Corso Sempione, Milan, co-designed by Gio Ponti with the Ponti Fornaroli Soncini studio and engineer Nino Bertolaia, originally built as the EIAR headquarters starting in 1940 but delayed by WWII bombing and completed in 1952. In Florence, the 24,000 sqm regional headquarters designed by Italo Gamberini (architect of the Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato) is also for sale; a protest was organized in March 2026 involving regional council president Stefania Saccardi. Rai is simultaneously investing in modernizing its Rome facilities, including Saxa Rubra, Viale Mazzini, Via Alessandro Severo, and Via Teulada. The plan aims to rationalize spaces amid digital transition and improve sustainability.
