cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Rai Teche and Rai Cultura have unearthed a rare 1964 documentary, "Primo piano. Henri Cartier-Bresson e il mondo delle immagini," featuring the legendary photographer speaking about his craft. The film, aired only once, will be rebroadcast on May 27, 2024, at 19:20 on Rai 5 as part of the series Dorian. In the documentary, Cartier-Bresson appears as a silhouette to maintain anonymity, discussing photography with interviewer Romeo Martinez, then editor of Camera magazine. The photographer, founder of Magnum Photos, defines himself as a "memorialist" rather than a reporter. He critiques the society of the 1960s as "an era that violates nature and disintegrates the image," and insists that true photography requires "eye, heart, and brain." The documentary includes texts by Giorgio Bocca and direction by Nelo Risi.
