Raffaello's Umbrian Youth Explored in Città di Castello Exhibition
From October 30, 2021 to January 9, 2022, Città di Castello hosts 'Raffaello giovane a Città di Castello e il suo sguardo' at the Pinacoteca Comunale, focusing on the early work of Raphael. The exhibition reconstructs his period in Città di Castello between 1500 and 1504, when at just twenty years old he received major commissions that opened doors to Renaissance courts and the Roman curia. It was here that Raphael broke from his master Perugino's model and created masterpieces like 'The Marriage of the Virgin' and the 'Mond Crucifixion'. Works on display include 'The Pala di San Nicola da Tolentino', 'L’Eterno e la Vergine' from the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, and 'L’Angelo' from the Pinacoteca di Brescia, along with loans from Oxford and London. Organizers note that Raphael's four to five years of artistic activity in Città di Castello, though long celebrated, remain fascinating for understanding his true formation, inventions, and relationships with contemporaries.
