Raffaello's 45 Masterpieces Reunited in 'Impossible' Exhibition at Urbino
To mark the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, the exhibition 'Raffaello. Una mostra impossibile' at the Collegio Raffaello in Urbino presents 1:1 scale reproductions of 45 paintings by the Renaissance master, including the fresco 'The School of Athens'. Conceived by Renato Parascandolo with scientific direction by Ferdinando Bologna, the show runs until September 30. The reproductions, printed on transparent fabric and backlit, bring together works from major museums worldwide: the Uffizi in Florence, the Vatican Museums, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the Louvre in Paris, the Prado in Madrid, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Washington. Featured works include the Madonna Conestabile, the Madonna of Terranuova, the Marriage of the Virgin, the Madonna of the Goldfinch, the Deposition, and the Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione. Bologna argued that 'impossible exhibitions' allow deeper knowledge of artworks and juxtaposition of pieces normally far apart. The exhibition aims to make Raphael's masterpieces accessible to audiences unfamiliar with art.
