Raffaello in 3D: New Film Explores the Master's Life and Art

digital · 2026-05-05

A new 3D film, 'Raffaello. Il principe delle arti in 3D', premiered in Italian cinemas on April 3-5, 2017, and will be distributed in 60 countries by Nexo Digital. Co-produced by Sky and the Vatican Museums in collaboration with Magnitudo Film, the film blends documentary, historical reenactment, and expert commentary. Directed by Luca Viotto, to whom the film is dedicated after his recent death, it features actor Flavio Parenti as Raphael. The film traces Raphael's life from Urbino to Florence and Rome, highlighting key works in the Vatican: the Stanze di Raffaello, Madonna di Foligno, Incoronazione della Vergine, the Tapestries, and the Trasfigurazione. Exclusive access includes the Logge and Loggetta in the Palazzo Apostolico. A reconstruction of the Sistine Chapel as it appeared on December 26, 1519, when Raphael's first seven tapestries were displayed under Michelangelo's ceiling, is a highlight. Experts Vincenzo Farinella, Antonio Natali, and Antonio Paolucci provide commentary. The production involved 18 months of work, 30 shooting days, over 100 crew, 200 hours of footage, 40 custom costumes, and advanced 3D, UHD, and VR techniques. Over 70 artworks are featured, including more than 30 by Raphael gathered for the first time, such as 'Lo Sposalizio della Vergine', 'Madonna del Cardellino', 'La Scuola di Atene', 'La Fornarina', 'La Velata', 'Madonna Sistina', and 'Trasfigurazione'. The 90-minute film aims to be both educational and visually stunning.
