Rafaël Rozendaal's Digital Art Installation 'Light' at MoMA Lobby

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Rafaël Rozendaal's installation 'Light' is now on view in the Agnes Gund Garden Lobby of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York until spring 2025. Curated by Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design and director of research and development at MoMA, the exhibition features 20 works, each lasting two to three minutes, generated by an algorithm from storyboards designed on paper. The total file size is 135 KB. Rozendaal, a Dutch-Brazilian artist based in New York, began creating internet-based artworks in the early 2000s, designing them to remain vivid across evolving software and hardware. His colorful animations treat code as paint, adapting to any display, from smartphones to the nearly 8-meter LED screen in the lobby. Rozendaal sells his websites to collectors who own the domain name but must keep the work publicly accessible; the collector's name is embedded in the source code and page title. In 2013, his work www.ifnoyes.com sold at Phillips New York for $3,500. He also created the Art Website Sales Contract for other artists and collectors. Antonelli, who introduced a permanent video game exhibition at MoMA, previously featured Refik Anadol's AI-driven 'Unsupervised' in 2023.
