Rafael Munárriz's First Solo Show in Italy Explores Roman Amphitheater and Racing Circuit
Rafael Munárriz (Tudela, 1990) presents his first solo exhibition in Italy at an unnamed venue in Cagliari, curated by Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo. The show, titled "Anfiteatro," features a series of sculptures that investigate the structure of the Roman amphitheater, abstracting its silhouette to extract and isolate the negative space. Munárriz considers the amphitheater a precursor to modern automobile racing circuits, paying homage to Cagliari. The exhibition's title is inspired by a video installation and drawings referencing the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo, Brazil, where Munárriz currently resides on a fellowship from the Fundación Botín. The closed form of the Formula 1 circuit is decomposed and repeated in multiple variations, altering its appearance. By contradicting the logic and rules of that initial reality, the artwork proposes multiple viewpoints through a second reality. Munárriz's conceptual work studies the relationship between humans and space, using art as a tool to reclaim simplicity through a reconstruction of reality that considers visual and social issues.
