Rafael Manuel's 'Filipiñana' premieres in US at Film Forum

On August 28, Film Forum will present the U.S. theatrical debut of 'Filipiñana,' directed by Rafael Manuel. The narrative centers on Isabel, a 17-year-old 'tee girl' who navigates the extravagant pavilions and verdant landscapes of Dr. Palanca's upscale golf course near Manila. The film employs meticulously crafted, stylized visuals with choreographed movements and a deadpan tone to portray the interactions between staff and affluent patrons. Isabel’s quest to return a misplaced golf club leads her to uncover a troubling reality beneath the surface, exposing class disparity, institutional patriarchy, and unseen violence within a vibrant, pastel-hued fairy tale. 'Filipiñana' premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, earning the Special Jury Award, and is executive produced by Jia Zhangke.
