Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Pioneer of Digital Art and Public Installations
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, born in Mexico in 1967 and educated in Montreal, has been active since the 1990s as a media artist known for large-scale interactive public installations. His 1999 Millennium celebrations in Mexico City featured a complex network of searchlights surrounding the government plaza, with lighting controlled by public input via computers, subverting official power. In 2006, Pulse Room, re-presented in 2014 at Bildmuseet in Stockholm, filled a space with lamps that pulse to visitors' heartbeats, creating a luminous procession of different rhythms. Lozano-Hemmer's technological optimism, shared by early digital artists, persists despite digital economy's negative aspects. His work, linked to neo-conceptual art, has gained international recognition, making him the most globally known Canada-based artist. Zoom Pavilion (2015), created with Krzysztof Wodiczko in Mexico City, analyzes selfie culture and surveillance using facial recognition to transform anonymity into presence. His installations have been shown at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Venice Biennale, Muac Museum Mexico City, MMCA Sydney, and biennials in Havana, Istanbul, Kochi, Liverpool, Montreal, Moscow, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, and London.
