Radio Garden: Free Global Radio Streaming App Goes Viral in Italy
Radio Garden, a website and app enabling free streaming of thousands of radio stations worldwide, has gone viral in Italy during the coronavirus lockdown. Originally launched in 2016 as an exhibition project commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision as part of the Transnational Radio Encounters research project, it was created by Amsterdam-based Studio Puckey & Moniker. The mobile app launched in 2018 for iOS and Android, with search features added in 2019 and a major redesign in early 2020. Its interface uses 3D satellite maps similar to Google Earth, with green dots marking stations. Users can discover diverse content, from Metallica on a Moroccan station in Rabat to news in Swedish from Stockholm. The platform continuously expands by inviting broadcasters to submit their streams.
