Radio Gallery Turns London's Resonance 104.4 FM into an Exhibition Space
On July 3, 2006, from 8 to 9 PM, London's Resonance 104.4 FM aired See the Song, the inaugural program of Radio Gallery, a series of twelve radio exhibitions curated by Anna Colin. The series invited artists and curators to engage with radio as a medium for artistic and curatorial practice. See the Song, created by design collective Åbäke, replaced a traditional DJ playlist with spoken descriptions of album covers, prompting listeners to mentally reconstruct the visuals. Other programs included Loris Gréaud's Crossfading, which used stereophonic crossfading to induce a state of 'lucid dreaming' and required headphones for an individual yet collective experience. Thibaut de Ruyter's Investigating EVP explored Electronic Voice Phenomena, blending historical recordings of paranormal radio occurrences with contemporary sound works. Jeremy Deller and Alex Farquharson's Propaganda examined radio as a propaganda tool, featuring WWII documents and live translations of broadcasts from conflict zones. Ryan Gander and Francesco Manacorda's Radio Transmitted Time Capsule for 7006 sealed three capsules containing soundtracks by seven artists (including Aurélien Froment and Falke Pisano) to be opened in 5,000 years. Dirk Fleischmann's The Stop Show was a live competition where participants estimated ten-second intervals via phone. All broadcasts were archived at radiogallery.org.
