Radical Presence: Black Performance Art Survey Opens at Grey Art Gallery and Studio Museum in Harlem
On September 10, 2013, the Grey Art Gallery at NYU debuted the exhibition Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art, curated by Valerie Cassel Oliver, which will be on display until December 7, 2013. This exhibit highlights 50 years of performance art by black artists, featuring around 24 creators. Lynn Gumpert emphasizes that this portion showcases historical pieces, while contemporary works will be presented at the Studio Museum in Harlem from November 14, 2013, to March 9, 2014, including more than a dozen live performances. Significant works include Pope.L's Eating the Wall Street Journal (2000) and Coco Fusco's Sightings Photo Series (2004), exploring themes of social construction, race, gender, and audience interaction with the art.
