Radical Playgrounds Exhibition Transforms Gropius Bau Park into Free Public Play Space

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Joanna Warsza, the curator, has reimagined the park next to Berlin's Gropius Bau with an exhibition titled Radical Playgrounds, which is free to the public and will be open until July 14. This exhibition, a response to the UEFA European Football Championship, includes 16 artist commissions that merge elements of playgrounds with social critique. Drawing inspiration from Lina Bo Bardi and the 1968 Modellen exhibition, architectural group raumlabor worked alongside Warsza and co-curator Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius to design interactive pavilions. Highlights include Joar Nango's swing installation focusing on indigenous knowledge, Céline Condorelli's field addressing women's sports access, and Agnieszka Kurant's AI sculptures. Additionally, The Playground Project presents a century of playground history, with some features set to be integrated into a permanent playground at Gropius Bau.
